Nechama in Mississippi

Friday

 Bobcat at work

On Friday, our original team of a dozen Nechama volunteers was joined by college students from Miami and California. The expanded work crew required a little extra preparation before we left camp, but enabled us to accomplish a lot of work, thanks to all those willing hands.

Right: contractor crew with Bobcat picking up debris piled on the roadside and taking it to dump truck (background) for removal to landfill

on the road
Hauling brush Brush pile Pounding wedges
Dragging brush from the yard to the curb for eventual removal Brush piles grew quickly as trees were disassembled by chainsaw crew Taking down a shattered tree; as the saw cuts through, you drive a wedge into the cut to prevent the trunk's weight from pinching (and stopping) the chain
Timber! Tree safely down Gene checking saw
As the tree started to fall (guided by ropes), it trapped the saw On the ground, the trunk can now be safely cut into manageable size Gene examining chainsaw; it escaped its adventure undamaged
Bennett home Mostly cut trunk Rolling the log
Larry Bennett, once mayor of Bay St. Louis, and his wife had volunteers sign their wall (note how high the water came into their house) Trunk cut most of the way through; now it must be rolled so cuts can be completed from the other side With enough hands helping, no job is too large to handle
